Why is my icon green? It's out of support for democracy and freedom for Iran. It's been quite the movement on Twitter, and I'm opting to carry that over to LJ. This will remain my primary icon so long as the current suppression and violence endures.

I know some of you loathe Twitter. That's your prerogative. However, at the moment, that's one of the primary news sources for anyone outside of Iran, due to the media crackdown. Whether you have/like Twitter or not, here's a place there you can see some of what's going on before even the news agencies air it--tweettabs.com --go to the top, and click on "#iranelection". This will bring up a column of constantly updating tweets, many of which are relaying news directly from those in Iran. While there's some repetition, and you'll have to filter much like with any public list, there's some substantial bits in there as well. I saw the video of 'Neda' (the girl who was shot and killed during protests) there yesterday before any of the news agencies started airing it. I will, however, forewarn you-- some of it is raw. Said video hadn't been sanitized for public viewing, and as such, her face is visible-- you see her face as she dies, you see the bleed out, and you see the reaction of those grieving and angry at her senseless death. I don't have the link immediately in front of me, but you can find it on YouTube easily enough. I think one comment via Twitter speaks volumes:

If an innocent girl gets shot halfway across the world, does she make a sound? Yes, and the whole world hears her.
